Multi-Response Optimization of Semi-Lightweight Concrete Incorporating Expanded Polystyrene Beads

The utilization of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads in semi-lightweight concrete (SLC) intended for repair and building applications has gained great attention recent years. This study examines the effect mix design parameters including binder content, water-to-binder ratio (w/b), EPS silica fume (SF) additions on mechanical properties durability SLC mixtures. experimental program was carried out following Taguchi approach four parameters, each having three levels, to produce an L9 orthogonal array. performance criteria under investigation were superplasticizer demand, density, compressive strength, splitting tensile ultrasonic pulse velocity, water absorption, sorptivity, abrasion resistance. Test results showed that w/b content most contributing altered SLCs performance. multi-response optimization method (TOPSIS) revealed superior could be achieved using a 375 kg/m3, 0.45, 3 SF replacement rate 8%. utilized create multivariate regression models predict properties. Such data can particular benefit engineers seeking use lightweight materials sustainable construction with optimized reduced cement carbon footprint.
